The programme discusses attitudes and emotions that may trigger abuse such as prejudice, anger, nervousness or fear and a ‘tough cop’ image.

Officer Survival Series

Produced by the L.A.County Sheriff’s Department, this series was developed to improve law enforcement training in response to the continued increase in assaults on Police Officers. It acquaints Officers with practical realities of life and death situations and teaches them to anticipate and deal effectively with potentially fatal situations.

ARMED SUSPECT

This programme tells the tale of a fatigued Officer late in his patrol. Key points include fatigue and its affect on performance, approach techniques, use of cover, expecting the unexpected, use of the microphone and outside speaker, placing the suspect at a disadvantage and waiting for back-up support, amongst other things.

BARRICADED SUSPECT

This programme deals with barricaded hostage incident and the unassigned Officers who respond. Key points include never stopping directly in front/view of a suspect, planning communications, importance of ordering the suspect to the Officer, containment of the location and the need for requesting special teams in certain situations.

FELONY STOP

This programme examines a situation similar to the famous Newhall shootout. Points emphasised are: the role of the dispatcher, expecting the unexpected, approach techniques, use of outside speaker and placing the suspect at a disadvantage.

FOOT PURSUIT : THE POINT OF NO RETURN

This tactical training programme re-enacts a fatal foot pursuit incident, which could have been avoided by following correct tactical procedures. Seven stop-action vignettes present quick-decision situations which generate effective discussion between partners, fellow officers and supervisors on the subject of correct foot-pursuit procedures. Safe containment procedures are examined with a special emphasis on behavioural patterns of fleeing suspects.

OFFICERS SHOOTING

The programme examines a fatal incident in which two officers were killed confronting a barricaded shooting/murder suspect. A training re-enactment emphasises the key elements of proper planning and 4-Cs, i.e., control, containment, co-ordination and communication.

OFFICER STABBING

The programme explores environmental awareness, familiarity with equipment, proper communication skills and adequately planned responses to confrontational situations. It places emphasis on an alert mental attitude and practical behaviour.

OFF-DUTY SURVIVAL

Police Officers feel a moral and civic duty to protect and serve the public, on or off-duty. However, when not on duty they are divested of all the equipment and deprived of amenities available on duty. This programme focuses on increased dangers of identification and problems of communication while off duty.

WILL TO SURVIVE

It is a dramatic re-enactment of a near fatal tragedy in which two Officers are involved in a deadly battle with three suspects. Actual radio transmissions relayed at the time tell the story of their survival. This programme is designed to make each officer that survival is really up to the individual. Tactical training helps reduce the risk of confrontations but when an officer is down only a strong will to live will bring him through.
